One of the fundamental awareness concepts at Tenikwa is that we need to change accepted practices and traditions. Children are most open to questioning the customs that they grow up with. The children of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. It is crucial that we instill a sense of empathy for the environment and create a sense of connectivity between humans and the earth they share with the creatures of the world.
Tenikwa would like to reach out to the children within all our communities. Many of these communities do not have the financial means to visit tourist facilities like Tenikwa, but it is these very children who have the ability to make the biggest contribution to change in the future. If you would like to arrange a visit for the children in your community, speak to us, and we will do our utmost to accommodate a visit to the centre.
There are many members of our community who remember the times when animals roamed the plains of Africa. Valuable folklore, myths and interesting facts lie within their memories, quickly surfacing when they visit Tenikwa. We learn so much from the older members of our community, in a time where often the aged gets discarded. Tenikwa has hosted groups from Care Centres, Aged Homes, Car Guards, giving everyone in our communities, the opportunity to see the cats of South Africa.

The Tenikwa School Visit is a learning experience for the student. The students are given a brief talk on the topic of the day and then shown a short video. Thereafter, they are split into small groups and go out, accompanied by their educators, to see the animals. The tour involves some fact giving, but also the guide will ask a lot of questions to engage the children and to increase the awareness of consequence and human impact on the environment. The overall purpose is to show the animal in its natural habitat and to make the child aware that without protecting the environment, the whole process starts to unravel and animals are unable to sustain themselves.
A special School Group rate is available for School Groups for the 09h00, 09h30 and 10h00 tours. The special School Group Rate is not applicable from 15th December to 15th January. 1 Educator per 6 learners is complimentary and there is a special rate for parents who wish to accompany their children on the tour. The school is welcome to arrange their own snack packs for the learners, to be eaten after the tour or a quote can be provided for refreshments after the tour.
Special topics can be included in the tour, for example the role of butterflies and birds, wetlands and eco-systems.
If requested worksheets can be handed out after the tour for the children to complete and hand in, or alternatively to complete as a follow-up exercise back in the classroom.
School Group bookings must be made beforehand.

Tenikwa Wildlife Centre caters for the disabled and is a wheelchair friendly facility.
The 1 hour guided walking tour is wheel-chair friendly and additional assistance can be given to ensure the disabled visitor gets around Tenikwa with ease. Benches have been placed at intervals so you can rest along the way.
Although it will not be possible for wheel-chaired visitors to enter the adult cheetah enclosures, we will make sure that the cheetahs are brought close to the visitor so that they are afforded the pleasure of experiencing these beautiful animals up close.
Tenikwa has conducted several tours for the visually impaired, where we go out of our way to use other senses on the tour to introduce the visitor to the amazing creatures of Africa.
If you feel that the 1 hour walking tour will be too much, we are more than happy for you to split the tour in two and take a break inbetween.
If you have special requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us beforehand.
