Chaka and Thandi stretching their legs
August has absolutely flown away with us. Although quiet on the tourist front, our rehab has been busy as you can see from the stats with 17 new admissions to the hospital in August. Snorkey made the headlines with his release into Amakhala. He has been kept in a boma until now, but now it's the big world for him. Here's a link to the article in The Herald - he looks happy to be back where he belongs.. Snorkey story
Are you a cat lover or would you like to experience a day in the life at an animal sanctuary? Due to numerous requests for a more comprehensive visit to Tenikwa, we have created an ALL DAY program just for you. Start at 07h30 with the Sunrise Cheetah Walk, and then get a personal introduction to the rest of the cats at Tenikwa on the Wild Cat Experience Tour. After this, you roll up your sleeves and join our animal keepers for several hours of animal enrichment, grooming sessions and assistance with the daily care of our cats, breaking for lunch mid-day. It's a lot of fun, exclusive, and very interesting as well. The program ends with a Sunset Cheetah Walk through indigenous Tsitsikamma Forest and Cape Floral Fynbos with wine and snacks afterwards as the sun sets.Read more on The Crazee Cat Day
For 52 Kurland Village animals, life just got a whole lot better. On 5th Sept, Tenikwa sponsored a mass sterilisation clinic at the nearby township of Kurland Village. Vets from Knysna Vet Clinic, Plett Vet Clinic, Knysna Animal Welfare and George State vet donated their time, and we could rely as always on our faithful regular volunteers from Plett to assist. Local businesses also donated some tokens of appreciation for the vets, and Monkeyland assisted us by keeping the kids occupied for the day which was an unexpected treat for them. Our monthly care clinics and the sterilisation clinics form part of our grassroots outreach program, where we would like to instill a sense of empathy first for the animals that the children come across in their daily lives, and in the longterm, our wildlife. Read more about our sterilisation clinic on 5th September 2010We received an interesting bird in for rehabilitation - a Ludwig's Bustard from a garden in Plett. These birds do not normally occur here. Read more about the bustard and see a picture. Quite a prickly problem arose when we got a call to rescue a porcupine from Wittedrift...
