Author : Lila Warren

Introduction

Bug sprays have become a common solution for managing pests in homes, gardens, and outdoor spaces. They provide quick relief from insects that can spread disease, damage plants, or simply create discomfort. However, the convenience of these products often comes with environmental consequences that many people overlook. As awareness of ecological impact continues to grow, questions surrounding the safety and sustainability of bug sprays are becoming more important. Exploring how these products affect the environment and how they can be improved offers a path toward more responsible pest control practices.

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Bug Sprays

Traditional bug sprays are typically formulated with chemical compounds designed to eliminate or repel insects quickly. While effective, these chemicals can have unintended effects on the surrounding ecosystem. When sprayed outdoors, they may drift into soil, water, and nearby vegetation, potentially harming beneficial insects and wildlife.

Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are particularly vulnerable. These species play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting food production, yet they can be negatively affected by exposure to certain pesticides. In addition, chemical residues may persist in the environment, contributing to long-term contamination of soil and water sources.

Indoor use also presents challenges. While sprays are often marketed as safe for household use, repeated exposure to certain chemicals can reduce air quality and create health concerns for both humans and pets. These factors highlight the need to carefully consider how and where bug sprays are used.

Balancing Effectiveness with Responsibility

Despite their potential drawbacks, bug sprays remain useful tools when used responsibly. The key lies in balancing effectiveness with environmental awareness. Instead of relying on frequent, widespread application, many experts recommend targeted use. This approach focuses on treating specific problem areas rather than applying chemicals broadly.

Another important consideration is choosing products with lower toxicity levels. Many modern formulations are designed to break down more quickly in the environment, reducing their long-term impact. Labels and certifications can help consumers identify products that meet certain environmental standards.

Education also plays a role. Understanding how pests behave and where they thrive allows individuals to use bug sprays more strategically. By addressing root causes, such as standing water or food sources, it becomes possible to reduce reliance on chemical solutions altogether.

Exploring Natural and Eco-Friendly Alternatives

As sustainability becomes a priority, natural and eco-friendly pest control options are gaining popularity. These alternatives often use plant-based ingredients or biological methods to deter or manage pests without introducing harmful chemicals into the environment.

Essential oils, for example, are commonly used in natural bug repellents. Ingredients like citronella, eucalyptus, and lavender can help keep insects away while remaining safer for humans and pets when used correctly. Additionally, introducing natural predators, such as ladybugs for garden pest control, offers a biological approach that supports the ecosystem.

Another growing trend is the use of integrated pest management strategies. This method combines multiple techniques, including physical barriers, habitat modification, and minimal chemical use, to achieve effective results. By focusing on prevention and balance, eco-friendly solutions reduce the need for traditional sprays while maintaining control over pest populations.

The Role of Professional and Community-Based Solutions

In some cases, managing pests sustainably requires more than individual effort. Professional services are increasingly adapting to meet environmental standards by offering safer and more targeted treatments. These services often use advanced techniques to minimize chemical exposure while still addressing pest concerns effectively.

For example, solutions like many of Charlotte’s pest removal services reflect a shift toward approaches that prioritize both efficiency and environmental responsibility. By focusing on methods that reduce harm to non-target species and surrounding ecosystems, these services demonstrate how pest control can evolve to meet modern expectations.

Community awareness also contributes to better outcomes. When neighborhoods adopt consistent practices, such as proper waste management and water control, pest populations can be managed more effectively with less reliance on chemical sprays. This collective effort reinforces the importance of sustainability on a broader scale.

Innovations and the Future of Sustainable Pest Control

The future of pest control is likely to be shaped by innovation and continued research. Scientists and manufacturers are developing new products that aim to deliver effective results with minimal environmental impact. These include biodegradable formulas, precision application systems, and even technologies that target specific pests without affecting other organisms.

Smart technology is also beginning to influence pest management. Devices that monitor pest activity and environmental conditions can help identify issues early, allowing for more precise and limited interventions. This reduces unnecessary chemical use and supports a more sustainable approach overall.

Consumer demand will continue to drive these advancements. As more people prioritize environmental responsibility, the market for eco-friendly pest control solutions will expand. Over time, this shift has the potential to redefine industry standards and create more sustainable options for everyone.

Conclusion

Bug sprays play an important role in managing pests, but their environmental impact cannot be ignored. By understanding the risks associated with traditional products and exploring more sustainable alternatives, it becomes possible to strike a balance between effectiveness and responsibility. Through informed choices, innovative solutions, and a commitment to environmental awareness, pest control can evolve into a practice that protects both our living spaces and the ecosystems around us.

15 June 2026 we got the call we had been waiting for! We got the go ahead that 20 June 2026 would be perfect for our penguin release…. 5 days notice from Ocean Sailing Charters who always keep an eye on the weather for us for the best date, let us know it was going to be a good day for the release with great weather for another 10 days after that.

So it was all hands on deck!! Natures Valley Trust, BirdLife Plett, Plett Stranding Network, SANParks, Cape Nature and Tenikwa knew we had to let the Plettenberg Bay community know that there was a penguin release on just a few days away. Penguin posts with names and faces of the Fabulous Five were shared all over social media and the excitement started to build.

NVT arriving early at the beach to put the crowd ropes up, Birdlife Plett setting up their speaker system and fundraising members getting in place, Robberg Vets & SANParks putting the Penguin enclosure up ready, only then waiting for the VIP’s (very important PENGUINS) to arrive.

Penguins being released at Plettenberg Bay

As we pulled up to the beach we were blown away by the support of our wonderful town. Even though the weather was chilly it didn’t stop everyone coming to see Penny, Lucky, Thai, Easter and Minke off.

Penguins being released at Plettenberg Bay

And the penguins didn’t disappoint either…. As soon as the little pen gate was opened, their natural instinct kicked in and off they went straight into the ocean. There were tears of joys, rounds of applause and great excitement for yet another successful release.

And with African penguins now being critically endangered, we all have to do whatever we can to make sure that African Penguin releases are something that your great great grandchildren get to attend

Msizi has been part of the Tenikwa family since August 2012 when he joined as a guide and animal keeper as a second-generation staff member. His father Alfred Shange, and respectfully known by all as “Baba Shange” has been with the founders of Tenikwa over thirty years, and journeyed with them when they made the move from KwaZulu Natal in 2003.

Where the Kwa in Tenikwa comes from

Those who have visited Tenikwa will recognise his friendly face and remember the passionate way in which he guided your tour; many of you know him by the name Msizi which is his tour guide badge name and those who are yet to visit Tenikwa will hopefully get to meet one of our long term serving staff members.

Msizi with guests on tour explaining about our unique indigenous flora that is found along the Garden Route

True passion and dedication

Msizi has shown nothing but passion and devoted dedication to Tenikwa by caring for the resident animals with us here. His passion for guiding and wildlife helped him navigate as well as progress within the organisation until he was appointed as the head guide. In this role, Msizi has aided in the care and nurture of our resident animals, but also applying these skills in training up new guides to the Tenikwa level of competence and knowledge that guests notice when on tour.

Tours at Tenikwa

Msizi has more than 10 years experience in the guiding department conducting tours which we still offer to this day, such as the Wild Cat Experience, Cats in Conservation, Forest and Fur, Private Tour and The Eco-kidz Family Challenge.

Msizi has a rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education so when giving a tour he can not only give you information about the various species and the challenges they face, but can also tell you a story about each of these animals.

Happy 40th Birthday, Msizi

To him this is not just a job, but a lifestyle. Come and do a tour at Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre and learn more about the wild cats of South Africa with our experienced guides who take pride in conservation.

Self-care is a big part of our mental health and overall healthy life. More than simple indulgences like manicures, facials, and pedicures, self-care includes keeping regular doctors appointments, staying physically fit, and eating a nutritious diet. Self-care also includes knowing the signs of stress and anxiety and staying away from those stressors. It also includes maintaining a level of relaxation and tranquility to reduce the risk of stress creeping in. Continue reading to discover how nature affects our mood and how caring for wildlife is connected to our wellbeing.

In addition to nature being vital to our health and wellbeing, enjoying wildlife is equally important to our health. That is why going on a long nature walk, enjoying the sights and sounds from wildlife, while tiring, is also invigorating. It makes us feel motivated, stronger, and ready to connect with nature and take on more.

Connecting with nature includes more than simply going outside. Being connected to nature makes individuals feel part of the land that we live on and helps us understand our responsibility to it. Therefore, we must experience nature as often as possible and encourage others to connect and take care of nature, especially since it is also self-care.

Some ways that nature and wildlife work to put us in a better mood are:

Boosts Your Mood

It is hard to stress how beneficial spending time outdoors daily is to self-care and our mood. In addition to strengthening our immune system, fresh air and sunshine have several other benefits. Those include:

Fights Depression

Fresh air and sunshine help fight depression by boosting the serotonin in our brains and not only improves the mood, but it also helps us stay calm and focused on the positive.

Helps Get Better Sleep

Fresh air and sunshine help us get better sleep because the light of sunshine helps to regulate our circadian rhythm which in turn increases or decreases our melatonin levels.

Makes Our Immune System Stronger

The Vitamin D from the sunshine is crucial to reducing illness, reducing infections, and creating an overall stronger immune system.

Planting to Reconnect

Another way of connecting with nature and boosting your mood is by digging in the dirt and planting. That could be gardening vegetation for sustenance or plants for beauty. There is something about being in the sun, feeling the soil, and planting seeds that do as much for your mood, mental and physical health.

Some tips to begin gardening if you’ve never had one are:

• Decide on your site.
• Watch where the sun hits and plant there.
• Start your garden with great soil.
• Understand your area’s frost dates.

For planting a flower garden outside, some professional gardener tips are:

• If you want longer stemmed flowers, plant your flowers close together. Doing that reduces the number of weeds that can grow between them and increases the number of flowers that your plant will produce.
• For those who want to grow flowers to bring inside and make arrangements with, remember that you also need filler plants and foliage for your arrangements.
• To save tall plants from getting mowed, put rectangles that are made from flagstone around your flower bed. It helps your flowers from being trampled by blades and feet.

Nature Can Become A Sanctuary

Regardless of where you live, the above explains why it is important to get outside daily. If you are more inclined to sit back and enjoy nature, consider building a sanctuary for the wildlife that’s in your own backyard. Make it your place of peace and tranquility where you can allow nature and wildlife to boost your mood. You can enjoy, appreciate, and be grateful for the nature and wildlife in the confines of your yard. According to Kennedy Wild Bird Feed, there is a scientific study that found that those living in areas where they could see or at least had regular access to birds, shrubs, and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and stress. Therefore, creating a sanctuary for birds and having lots of greenery will significantly improve your well-being.

A Prescription for Nature-Deficit Disorder

The concept of nature-deficit disorder is the view that humans, particularly children, are spending less time outside and that this trend leads to a variety of behavioral disorders.

We have evolved as human beings to depend on nature to govern our emotions and behaviors. Completely shutting down our brains and bodies might have negative consequences. Getting outside may have a profound effect on your brain.
Over half of the world’s population already lives in cities, and this figure is expected to reach 70% within a few decades. Just as urbanization and isolation from the environment have increased drastically, mental diseases such as depression have increased significantly.

Relaxing in the great outdoors can be an extremely therapeutic experience. It can open your mind up to new sights, sounds, and perspectives. With the uncertainty of the pandemic and social unrest, it would be an understatement that people are stressed, scared, and burnt out. COVID-19 has become an inherent part of our lives. Some of us may recognize this stress but some people might not so it’s important to check in with ourselves, practice self-compassion, and be kind to others. Practice being more aware of this stress and actively make changes like going outside and experiencing nature to help you find inner peace and clarity.

As you have read, there are several benefits to your well-being from connecting to nature and caring for and appreciating wildlife. We hope this article sparks you to recognize when your well-being needs a tune-up and that you try out these suggestions.

Be well!

”Come see our wild cats and help us to help your school” , is a campaign that was launched on the 13th of July 2019 at Plettenberg Primary School with the core objective of trying to instill empathy towards wildlife in children through discounting conservation based tours. Our mantra is ,” take care of the earth and she will take care of you” . The gate takings collected will help fund our wildlife rehabilitation hospital and 10% will go towards a nominated school project.

We are looking forward to go beyond the boarders of Western Cape province reaching out so that every child in school will have a chance to see the Indigenous wild cats of South Africa whilst also contributing to the development of their school.

The Ecokidz Family Challenge Tour is the most popular with ages 6 to 12 years. Children will go back home “eco-wise” after being nourished with fascinating facts about the wild cats and good environmental practices such as recovering, re-use and recycling. This family program has a short certificate ceremony that is held after the child proudly pledges to become an eco warrior and help protect all things wild and wonderful and to take care of animal spaces and habitats. An eco kid also shares the knowledge that would have been gained and help others to understand.

School children are also welcome together with their parents to do a tour of their choice at a discounted rate for a good cause as these gate takings are what keeps our Rehabilitation hospital going. Lions, cheetahs, leopard, servals, african wild cats and caracals are some of the many different animals you will get to see.

Come in your numbers support this good initiative. To find out more about these fun-filled family Tours at Tenikwa click the link https://tenikwa.com/tenikwa-wildlife-tours/

The Garden Route is a very distinct place in South Africa, green and so vibrant with its wealth in Biodiversity. It hosts over 300 species of birds and about 85 mammal species. The Garden Route stretch is 300km long, from far west at Mossel Bay in Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. It is the gemstone of South Africa, with beautiful landscapes, Mountain passes, ever Green Forests, beautiful beaches decorating the whole stretch of the Garden Route. It is quite a marvellous experience for many travellers exploring through the Garden Route especially for Free Independent Travellers (FIT)s. The Garden Route hosts a number of guests coming from different parts of the world every year.

The top ten International visitors for South Africa as stated by the Southern and East African Tourism Update website are; United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, India, Australia, China, Netherlands, Brazil, and Canada respectively. Among these top International visitors three off them recorded an increase in visits to South Africa in May 2018 as compared to May 2017 that is, Brazil (9% increase), France (6% increase) and China (5% increase). The rest of the countries have suffered a decrease in entrance numbers this May as compared to last year’s May. The drop in numbers is still a mystery to many. All these international travellers are the key not only to the country’s economy but as well as to many conservation efforts across the country. Wildlife Tourism being the most popular for many international travellers, indirectly promotes conservation of our natural resources. It also influences a change of mind for many travellers who pass through the Garden Route, to adopt a sense of respect for nature after experiencing a full testimony of how beautiful the world can be, if nurtured. Most of those passing through ending up as involuntary sponsors of conservation efforts not only in the Garden Route but across the world as well. The urban world takes away the eco-consciousness of many as they are spawn from a world surrounded by concrete, steel, glass, processed wood and fake plants. It only takes a visit to a place of natural beauty, a place of tranquillity and a place of recollection, that we find ourselves one with nature. The Garden Route for example, is vibrant with evergreen forests, birdlife, insects, animals and the air fully oxygenated. It is quite an awe of existence, and yet many miss it on their visit to South Africa. They fly in to Cape Town, spend a day or two there, then fly out to Mpumalanga to see the Kruger National Park or Sun City and then leave afterwards with the impression they experienced a full South African safari. Yet part of the best places in South Africa would have been missed out by nature lovers and people looking for a big break from Cityscapes. Only part of the FITs get to discover the best less targeted places in the country and most of them leave pleasant inspiring reviews on social media. They will attest to the brilliance of the Garden Route and its conservation based activities alongside its thriving biodiversity.

We have been blessed in South Africa with many Travel Journalists passing through and sharing their experiences of nice places in South Africa. One of note is André Araújo who is a passionate Tourism Consultant and a Travel Journalist based in Brazil. He travels around the world exploring less publicised intriguing places and writing about them online. He shares his stories on various social platforms to inspire the appreciation of lesser known places harbouring great experiences for travellers. He is of Brazilian origin and shares his travel stories in Portuguese, which is the main language spoken in Brazil. He decorates his travel stories with tangible media like pictures to give a glimpse of the places he visited and experienced. He has shared a number of articles since his recent visit with his step father Gilson Tavares around early May. This we believe has had an impact in the increase of the Brazilian presence in South Africa. Even the Garden Route has been recording a rise in FIT Brazilian travellers of recent late. Below is an extract from one of his articles about Tenikwa;

“Located in the rural region of the Crags, the Tenikwa is a wildlife rehabilitation and awareness centre aim to raise awareness about the preservation of several species, mainly felines. The main focus of Tenikwa is the rehabilitation and reintroduction of these animals to nature, in some cases when there is no chance of rehabilitating them back into the wild, they remain under Tenikwa’s care. They also have a animal hospital on site (not open to the public) where they heal injured wild life. They rehabilitate about 200 wild animals each year”

Translated from the original Portuguese extract below;

On this particular article titled “4 PASSEIOS PARA CURTIR NA ÁFRICA DO SUL” translated; “ 4 SHORT RIDES IN SOUTH AFRICA” he wrote about 4 activity places he enjoyed in the Garden Route namely; Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre, Two Oceans Aquarium, Horse Trails at Hog Hollow, and Birds of Eden. He also composed an alphabetical A to Z tips for a South African experience article. Each alphabetical letter featuring activity places, food and/or accommodation places he recommends from his own experience. He also composed another one on 4 unusual and spectacular themed tours in South Africa. One other article about the Garden Route was shared on a Travel English website called the ‘Out of Your Comfort Zone’ and the article is all in English.

Here below are the links of his adventurous experiences in South Africa;

In a world full of inequality and poverty, more and more children are born in Africa into a world that lives under the poverty line. They not only suffer malnutrition but also end up lacking the basic right to education. This impacts on their future as it mirrors their parent’s failures as they would not make it in life financially in a fast growing civilised world where education is a necessity. Government across the world struggle with balancing this socio-economic problem, where basic necessities are not met for everyone because of such setbacks.

Born In Africa

Born in Africa is one of those dedicated Non Profit Organisations fighting the imbalances in the societies of the world. They are very active in socio-economically disadvantaged areas around Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Focusing on educating children and giving them that chance to learn as much as possible about the world around them, by creating a platform that they would not have been possible in their socio-level status. Education is a fundamental right for all kids in the world. The present day children are our future and need to learn the basic principles of life to better manage it in future. A well set education foundation provides solutions for these children, equipping them to get out of hopeless circumstances. They live in an environment which is often dominated by poverty, abuse, and unemployment.

Born In Africa’s mission is to develop well rounded, independent, and successful young adults acting as role models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, South Africa.

EcoKidz

This week on the 25th of June 2018, Tenikwa welcomed Born in Africa back with children from different places in the area. We hosted more than 50 children in our facility. They were educated about our South African wild cats and our conservation efforts. They had a great time seeing and learning about these majestic cats, many of which had never been seen before. They left with warm hearts after a fun filled educative day and as pledged Eco-Kidz who respect nature. It all begins with these young ones, if we are to change our destructive actions towards nature which have threatened many species livelihood across the world, big and small. This group of lucky little ones are few of many that Born in Africa has helped and facilitated tours for with us and we look forward to the next visit on the 29th of June 2018.

“Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean”

Plastic pollution is a major concern for all nations at the moment. This is simply because it threatens all marine life and threatens the health of all life including humans. Each year it is estimated we produce about 300 million tons of plastic, an estimated 13 million leaks into the ocean, and by 2050 it is projected that plastics will out-weigh fish in the ocean.

Oceans store 50 x more Carbon Dioxide than the atmosphere

Oceans provide more than 50% of the Oxygen we breathe and stores 50 times more Carbon Dioxide than the atmosphere. It regulates the whole world’s climates, by transporting heat from the equator to the poles and vice-versa transferring the cold from the poles to the equator thereby creating a balanced regulated climatic system in the world. This same climatic system ensures a sustainable weather system for different regions and is responsible for our weather seasons across the globe. It is estimated that about 76% of the U.S. trade involves Marine transportation. This is also true for most of the bulk transportation channels of the whole world from continent to continent. The ocean provides about 3 million jobs in the U.S alone and a hefty over 200 billion dollars contribution to their GDP per year.

More than 50% of all life on earth is found in the ocean

In Namibia the ocean with its provisions namely fishing is the second GDP contributor to their economy, making it one of their most important assets. At least one in four people in the world is dependent on sea food as their number one source of protein. The ocean resources basically contribute more than 5% of global GDP and more than 50% of all life in the world is found in the ocean. It contains about 99% of living space in the world and less than 10% of that space has been covered by human explorations. This shows how huge the ocean is and how much respect we should give it or honour it with.

Less than 1% of the ocean is protected or managed

Given the amount of surface cover the ocean envelopes, it is hard to believe that only about 1% of it is protected or managed. The ocean has been identified as a key frontier to economic growth under Operation Phakisa in South Africa. Operation Phakisa aims to utilise coastal lines for growth and development. Besides fisheries it has been noted in South Africa that a greater part of the Tourism industry happens in the coastal regions and in 2016 alone it contributed 9.3% to the GDP. This inspires the vision that if sustainable coastal strategies are set and implemented, more can be harvested from the ocean. It is a target of growth and development during these trying economic times. To achieve sustainable development of any ocean related growth and development, it cannot be ignored that exploitation of the coastal resources can spiral out of hand if no proper environmental management systems are not set in. The protection of coastal places has to be one and foremost top priority. Controlling fishing so that the ocean retains its biodiversity to balance its ecosystem, controlling off-shore Gas or Oil mining if it is to be introduced in the development plans, and managing port side projects so that no Ramsar sites are affected nor coastal lines eroded or intoxicated with no mitigation plans in place.

Intoxication of the ocean has been a huge cause of concern for marine life. Ranging from oil spills, to leaking radio-active elements, and to currently the biggest marine life killer being Plastic pollution. Marine birds die from ingesting fish with plastic elements in them and from picking up plastic pieces in the ocean to feed their young assuming they are fish eggs which mostly resemble the transparent nature of plastics. Turtles die from ingesting sizeable transparent plastic bags confusing them with Jelly fish. The list is endless of the chain of impact in which plastic is causing to all life forms in the world.

Not only marine life is affected, we are too.

Humans are not going to get off lightly as plastic pollution grows. A large part of our world population depends on the same sea food that is exposed to a lot of plastic particles that we humans are also now ingesting indirectly.

On this day, the 8th of June, the Ocean is acknowledged as a great asset to the whole world. Plastic pollution has raised its head prominently for many environmental awareness days this year. It is a top priority topic for this year’s Ocean day and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. The whole world needs to unite and support these solutions to change the gloomy future that is going to follow if nothing is done to curb this plastic problem.

What everyone needs to do is to;

Stop using plastic straws,

Stop using single-use plastic products,

Use reusable water bottle for water and stop buying single use plastic water bottles,

Cook more often and fore-go Take-Aways which come with a lot of containers some of which are not bio-degradable or eco-friendly. Refuse plastic cutlery for days you do order something,

Separate and Recycle plastics by sending them to the relevant recycle companies,

Take your own shopping bags to the shops and stop buying plastic bags most of which have low percentage of recycled plastics incorporated,

Buy in bulk, so that you have bigger containers with lasting contents than frequently buying small containers like as with the case of single-serve yoghurt tubs.

Support all new eco-friendly products like Bamboo Straws, bio-degradable paper straws or edible straws instead of the plastic straws. Use Bio-degradable grocery paper bags instead of plastic paper bags. Voice out your eco-friendly ideas, support all businesses that are eco-active or eco-conscious and shun away from single use plastic businesses. A thumbs up to all the entities protecting, rehabilitating, doing sustainable research and promoting good practices on marine life and marine management.

World Environment Day, held each year on 5th June, gives us yet another opportunity to sit up and re-evaluate our living style. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

It is estimated that about 13 million tons of plastics leak into the ocean each year, and about 100 000 marine animals killed by plastic each year. These estimates from trusted environmental organisations reveal how plastic pollution has grown to be the world’s biggest environmental challenge. The amount of solutions or the implementation of plastic solutions is not catching up to the amount of plastics being dumped onto the environment. Sustainable behaviour needs to be practiced by everyone from this day onwards to reduce and solve the plastic problem.

India takes the initiative

India being on the top list of the biggest consumers and polluters in the globe, have taken the initiative to change their ways and lead in practicing sustainable behaviour by hosting this year’s World Environment Day, focussed on the world’s mounting plastic problem. India is taking leadership, given it has one of the highest recycling rates in the world. It can be instrumental in battling plastic pollution across the world. The World Environment Day is a United Nations Environment led global event, one of the most celebrated environmental days each year, recognised and celebrated by many communities.

5.5ft high wave of plastic

India caught the World’s eye when their Versova Beach in Mumbai had about 5.5 feet high plastic garbage on the whole coast, no one could walk along the coast let alone to swim in that ocean. Two years down the line they managed to turn it all around from disgusting (by their own admission) to currently one of the most beautiful coastal stretches of the world. The whole clean-up was done by community volunteers led by a high spirited Lawyer and Environmentalist Afroz Shah, who after moving into an apartment located by the coastline could not believe what he came across on his backyard ocean view side. He rallied up people to amazingly turn around the trash-ridden coast to pristine. The Versova’s case study now challenges and inspires the whole world to rise up and start leaving responsibly. It is totally not impossible to turn around even the most heavily polluted places to pristine as it has been done and achieved by our fellow people in India.

The Transformed coast of Mumbai, from trash ridden to prestine.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Presently there is a big island of floating plastic garbage in the Pacific Ocean known to date as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This floating mass of plastic is said to be as big as Alaska and it is just moving along with the pacific current.

The last straw

Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre is already practicising responsible business processes. We took one step closer to reducing single use plastics, having recently stopped providing Plastic Straws at our Chesters Café. This is such an easy initiative to institute and one of the eco-friendly steps to beating plastic pollution as it is estimated that over 500 million straws are used daily in certain world class fast economies like the United States and most of which find their way into the ocean somehow.

What you can do;

Stop using plastic straws,

Stop using single use plastic products,

Use reusable water bottle for water and not keep buying single use plastic water bottles,

Buy in bulk, so that you have bigger containers with lasting contents than frequently buying small containers like as with the case of yoghurts,

It all begins with us, to have a pristine environment that will sustain its own natural systems and create a better future we all wish to have. We need to simply Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
