Oceans provide more than 50% of the Oxygen we breathe and stores 50 times more Carbon Dioxide than the atmosphere. It regulates the whole world’s climates, by transporting heat from the equator to the poles and vice-versa transferring the cold from the poles to the equator thereby creating a balanced regulated climatic system in the world.
It is estimated that about 13 million tons of plastics leak into the ocean each year, and about 100 000 marine animals killed by plastic each year. These estimates from trusted environmental organisations reveal how plastic pollution has grown to be the world’s biggest environmental challenge.
On this day, the 23rd of May 2018, we celebrate the oldest creatures’ existence through awareness campaigns and showing respect to them through acknowledging the challenges they face.
There’s no question about it. The Garden Route is abuzz with diverse life forms. It is a haven for nature lovers, rich in biodiversity – both plant and animal species. This is in most cases due to human interference which has caused an imbalance that the species fail to adapt to. Plastics are becoming a major concern on the environment. Plastic waste is suffocating the earth systems at an alarming rate, and the alarming thing is, we hardly notice the damage those thrown away plastic straws or plastic bottles have amounted to. It is time to wake up and put an end to it whilst we still can, before we get to a point of no return. Two Sea Turtles recently admitted for rehabilitation to Tenikwa by the public and its conservation partner SANParks gets transported to Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town from the Plettenberg Bay Airport by CemAir.
